"Your location..." request

It appears that adding the Google Play activity to your project causes the installation to request permission for Your Location along with other innocuous requirements. Two questions:
1. What does this activity have to do with the need to incur a GPS location?
2. Has this proven to be a "turnoff" to potential users who may regard it as giving up more info than they wish?

    The 'Course Location' permission will be requested if you are using activities or monetization options that need it in order to work. For example, the 'map' activity and Amazon banner ads.
